Current ARTicles 3

1. What is the artist purpose of shooting in Tijuana?
Jason Fritz wanted to record all his wonderful experiences and to him, theres never a dull day in Tijuana,"The photos posted on Tijuanalandia are evidence of the surreal-ness, absurdity and beauty I experience everyday."- Jason Fritz

2. The photographers blog is getting a lot of attention from the L.A. Times, after looking through his blog why do you think he is getting national recognition?
Because his photos bring a different and endearing outlook on an area of the world that is often looked down on, or at least, not held in high regard. However, through his images, he is able to shed light on how beautiful the people and culture are.

3. What aspects of his blog could you incoprotate to your blog if you were to continue to promote yourself through that specific media?

I would choose to photograph the most interesting place things and people around me.  I would photograph things that inspire  and promote wareness.

2. In regards to my best and worst photographs, there is a image of why each were dubbed their titles. In my worst photo, my concept and meaning did not shine through as I wanted too, instead it got lost in the disarray of bad lighting, composition, and printing. There is no contrast and the only element of design clearly visible is balance with my two models. In contrast, my best photograph was well composed with my model in a puddle, and the reflection of the overcasting clouds and gray sky clearly visible. The contrast of the image was beautiful and the elements present were emphasis, contrast, texture and the rule of thirds. This photograph captures the clouds in the sky, the trees that surrounded us using the reflection the water on the ground, and I posed her so that she was facing the "Heavens" and smiling at the beauty that is nature. The meaning is clearly represented, and that is why this is not only my favorite photograph, but my greatest of this year.

3.
Content: My sense for content has grown in intensity and composition throughout this year, i can see how the meanings behind my pieces have become increasingly complex, making it even harder to convey through  photograph.

Adjusting Camera Settings: I no longer struggle  to determine the correct camera settings depending on the type of image and lighting I want to convey.

Incorporating Elements of Art and Principles of Design: I mostly stick with the elements of contrast, lines, and emphasis. I have explored the elements of color and balance, and I have found that I am able to express myself and meanings more accurately.

Printing Skills: Printing is always difficult for me because of the light settings, however, I often get a good end result. My first print in this class was my best print with great contrast and clarity.

Lighting: I struggled with lighting in my worst photograph, not realizing my female model was too close to the hot light, however I usually do well with lighting and my image comes out nice.
Photoshop Skills: I know absolutely nothing about photoshop sadly. I would have liked to expand my knowledge of the program, however I was unable to.

Composition: I believe I am very good at composing the images I want to convey, for example my still life shot was very well composed and turned out exactly how I wanted it to. With my utilization of shadows, I was also able to convey the garden idea with tea I wanted to show.

Model Managing: It is very hard for me to manage models because I don't like directing people or making them uncomfortable with poses I want. I just generally don't like telling people what to do, therefore I tend to use only one model, it makes directing them easier. In my worst photo, it was hard to pose the two models because I didn't have the conviction to tell then what I wanted them to do. Also, I was unsure of the poses I wanted them to do.

4. Include any other information that shows your progression throughout the school year.
I believe overall I did grow as a photographer in my understanding of the art as well as who I am as a photographer. I also have a clear understanding of what my strengths and weaknesses are in regards to composition, models, and printing. I have learned a lot this year and am forever grateful for having had those experience my senior.

5. How could I have improved this class to better help your personal learning style?
I believe that if we started digital photograph earlier on in the second semester, I would have gotten a better idea of color photography and knowledge of photoshop. Also, I would have understood Digital SLR cameras and all the ways of shooting with this form of photography.

Current ARTicles 2

1. Who is the subject in the piece? What is her significance to Picasso?
I believe the subject was an important woman to Picasso, possibly a family member or his mother. I get this from the emphasis on her breast and the book in her lap ( like when your mother would you read stories). I do know for sure that the emphasis on the book shows the woman is educated and the positioning of the book being slowly consumed in her "belly" shows that she is possibly passing on that knowledge to her child.

2. It looks like a 5th grader could of painted this piece. Why do you think a painting can cost that much?
I believe the painting costs so much because it was created by a world renowned painter, therefore it is "worth" it.

3.  When the world is in a recession do you think Art should cost this much? Why or why not?
No it shouldn't because the money that went toward purchasing this piece could have been given to a vast amount of people who are struggling in this recession.

Cultural Identity Reflection

Through the image of an interracial couple, I wanted to diminish any false pretense that race is a deciding factor in what culture you relate to most. Through bypassing the ethnic restraints that so strongly dictate people's view of culture, I had hoped to let the true meaning of culture shine through. By using the black background, I wanted to bring an emphasis on my two models with out any outside distractions. Also, the positioning of my models back to back, with the female in context is leaning on her partner poses to symbolize how the judgement of one's race and culture can affect the person. I wanted to show how they find comfort and protection in each other, in their relationship, despite the ugly misgivings the world might bring to them. I had them dress in conventional clothes, in order to emphasize how closely related culturally they are, despite race and gender differences. I wanted overall to show that ethnic categories should not blind your views of culture, because we find culture in all forms of our lives, through food, music, art, and more. I had difficulties printing this image because it turns out, the light positioned toward her face were too close. Next time I will take multiple shots but with the light positioned further from my subject. I believe, however that the flaw makes the image more mysterious, and can be seen as the girl's spirit still lingers, but is barely present due to her hardships.

Interview about Cultural Identity

Summary:

In my quest to find what people truly know about WHAT cultural identity is, I found a lot of reference to race.  Many answered that because they were a certain race or ethnicity, that they identify most with people of the same skin color (ie. this I was outside of school interview). Many didn't understand the concept as a whole, in which I would give my interpretation on what culture is and how one can related to many cultures  that deal with religion, music, food, art, language, etc. After my explanation people would go into detail on what cultural groups they truly identify with. Inside school however, the concept was not as hard to understand, wherein students would say that they identify with dancers, singer, and artists. I believe that stereotypes shadow the real meaning of what cultural identity is, because many associate race with concepts like Hip Hop or Mexican food.
